Where you sleep shapes your whole Gallipoli trip. The two main bases are Canakkale, a lively university city on the Asian shore, and Eceabat, a small town on the peninsula side a short ferry ride away.
This guide compares both, plus on-peninsula options, so you can match your base to your priorities and budget.
Canakkale: the lively city base
Canakkale has the widest choice of hotels, restaurants and bars, plus a handsome waterfront promenade and the Trojan Horse prop from the 2004 film. It is the best base if you want amenities and plan to combine Gallipoli with a visit to Troy.
The trade-off is the daily ferry crossing to reach the battlefields, which adds a little time to each day.
Eceabat: closest to the battlefields
Eceabat sits directly on the peninsula, putting Anzac Cove, Lone Pine and Chunuk Bair within a 15-30 minute drive. Accommodation is simpler and quieter, favoured by independent travellers and ANZAC Day pilgrims who want to be on-site at dawn.
Which base should you choose?
Choose Canakkale for comfort, dining and a Troy combination; choose Eceabat for proximity and an early start. For ANZAC Day specifically, anything within striking distance books out fast, so reserve as early as you can.
