Driving the Gallipoli Peninsula yourself gives you complete freedom over timing and stops. The key is a sensible route, because the sites spread along the coast and up the ridge, and aimless backtracking wastes a surprising amount of the day.
This itinerary orders the major sites into an efficient loop you can complete comfortably in a full day from Eceabat.
Morning: the landing beaches
Start on the Aegean coast at Anzac Cove and Ari Burnu, where the ANZACs landed on 25 April 1915. Continue to the Beach and Shrapnel Valley cemeteries before climbing inland, following the troops' route up from the shore.
Midday: the ridge battlefields
Drive up to Lone Pine, the Nek, Johnston's Jolly and the 57th Regiment Memorial, then on to Chunuk Bair at the high point of the ridge. This cluster holds the most intense fighting of the campaign and the finest views.
Afternoon: Helles and Cape Helles
If time allows, drive south to the peninsula's tip for the Helles Memorial and the British and French landing beaches, a quieter but historically vital part of the campaign often missed on day tours.
