For New Zealanders, Gallipoli is deeply tied to Chunuk Bair, the high point of the August 1915 fighting and the focus of New Zealand's commemorations. The trip from Auckland is long but meaningful.
Here is how to get from Auckland to Turkey, reach the peninsula and find the New Zealand sites.
Flying from Auckland to Turkey
There are no direct flights, so the journey from Auckland runs via Istanbul with one or two connections, often around 24 hours or more in total.
Allow recovery time before visiting the battlefields after such a long trip.
Reaching the peninsula
From Istanbul, Gallipoli is about four to five hours by road. A guided day tour or an overnight stay near Canakkale are the usual options.
See our Istanbul to Gallipoli guide for full details on transport.
The New Zealand sites
New Zealand's national service on ANZAC Day is held at Chunuk Bair, the height briefly taken in August 1915 and crowned by the New Zealand memorial.
Most visitors combine Chunuk Bair with the ANZAC Cove and Lone Pine sites nearby.
